Performance in the internship experience must be satisfactory following the first semester evaluation process, based upon the assessment of the student’s progress by the field site supervisor, the student’s academic advisor, and the Professional Counseling program faculty. Satisfactory performance in the first half of the student’s coursework is a prerequisite for the oral clinical examination for the M.Phil.Ed. Counselors typically complete a four-year bachelor’s degree and pursue a master’s degree in counseling before they begin their practice. Some counselors earn a counseling undergraduate degree, but those interested in pursuing a master’s degree may have a bachelor’s degree in a different or related field such as sociology, cultural anthropology or psychology.

You can choose to begin professional work directly upon completion or further your studies by pursuing a doctoral degree. Studies stress and coping as it relates to professionals in educational settings, health and wellness, and the identification of psychological resources that can help prevent stress. The Counselor Education program, in which the School Counseling concentration is offered, is housed in the Department of Educational Psychology. The department has consistently been ranked in the top 10 Educational Psychology programs by U.S. Educational Psychology is not accepting master’s program applications to the School Counseling concentration for fall 2024.

A traditional on-campus Master’s with a major in counseling (MCoun) is offered at OSU’s Cascades (in Bend). For students seeking a non-degree program, including those looking for courses to complete their Florida School Counseling Certification, NSU offers non-degree courses in counseling and psychology. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree prepares its graduates for faculty and research positions as counselor educators and for leadership positions in the counseling, mental health and consultation professions. The Counselor Education Program offers Doctoral degrees in Counselor Education and Masters degrees in Counselor Education with concentrations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. The internship experience provides students with the practical experience of providing hands-on services for a variety of clients and presenting concerns. Such services may include, but are not limited to, individual, couple, family, and group counseling with children, adolescents, and adults. Client concerns range from developmental and relational concerns to more severe pathology. All clinical experiences are performed under the direct supervision of an onsite licensed clinician. Professional counselors address the mental, emotional, and behavioral needs of individuals, families, students, and communities. After their counseling education, professional counselors go on to earn post-graduate hours in working with a variety of people under the supervision of an already licensed counselor.

Students acquire knowledge in the disciplines that underlie counseling including education, psychology, human development, learning, and social change. If you would like to continue working and need more flexibility, there are part-time as well as online options, which may take between two and three years to complete, depending on your level of commitment. This unit has offered graduate courses via Extended Campus since 1944 and full graduate degrees via Extended Campus since 1976.
